DadF, you use a wooden egg from a craft shop. They're roughly a little larger than a chicken egg. Drill a hole down the center and paint it. Thread the hole with about 8 inches of 50lb mono leader. Tie barrell swivels on both ends of the leader. This is for the weight to cast the fly. Tie one barrel to your line to your rod, on the other end tie about 18 to 24 inches of leader with the fly at the end. There are some variations of this, some folks put screw eyes in the egg. With the leader through the egg, it allows you to feel the hit without the fish feeling the weight of the egg.
You can cast pretty good distance with this, you work the fly with a twitch like bouncing a jig. I also use this with small jigs instead of a fly in rocky areas, its works very well. .
My Dad used this rig for years and swears the only thing he caught more bass on was a live eel. He has caught more stripers than anyone I have met.
