Larry,
I always leave 1/8-1/4 inch square on the ends, makes it easier to mark and drill, that way you know that eyes are 90 degrees to the belly hole, weight holes, ect... and while the plug body is still on the lathe I take a pencil and mark the spot where you want to locate weights, eyes, hooks (with lathe running) that way when I go to the drill press you got your marks on the plug and square ends makes it easy to drill( supports plug).That's why I love starting with square stock, I have a MUCH harder time locating and drilling with dowells.
