I'm a little confused. Do you want to throw plugs with an Alvey reel? I would think, although I'm not sure (and not Australian) that an Alvey rig would be used more for tossing chunks. It might be fun to screw around with an Alvey later on but for now I'd forget that idea. For plugging, I would get a rod no longer than say 9' for the "inside" and 10' for the surf. You want a rod that won't easily fatigue you after repeated casts. As far as the spinfisher is concerned, that's a good choice. You may also find that an Ugly Stik, although a tough rod, is a little "whippy" at the tip. I would look for something with a little more backbone. Maybe a St. Croix or a Fenwick. I would put a 5500 size reel on a 9' and the 6500 on a 10'. IMHO.
