Father's Day Bass

So my father and I head out Sunday morning to do a little bass fishing off the Cape. Dad and I used to fish a lot together but nowadays with both of us working full time it seems that schedules just aren't always convenient for both of us to get out together. Of late, I've been fishing a lot more often than he has. So at 4 AM sunday morning we head out to a spot that's been fishing well of late to see if we can entice a bass or two on eels. We arrive and start casting. My father is looking a little rusty, his casts aren't getting him all that far away from the boat. I tell him that he needs to get out a little further as no big bass would ever be ballsy enough to take his offerring right next to the boat. As soon as I mention this, a fish takes his eel and starts heading out to sea. The lines starts peeling off the Penn 750 and it is apparent that he is into a BIG fish. As is customary when a big fish is hooked, we both start making the necessary excuses so that if the fish is dropped, we can feel a little better about ourselves. "The fish isn't shakin its head. Probably just a big bluefish." "This reel doesn't seem to be working right. Did you check the drag?" Finally the fish stops running, after clearing about 175 yards of 20 lb test in a hurry. The fight is on and my dad slowly gains line back. After a back and forth battle the fish is boatside. I reach over and haul aboard a 49 inch 42 pound bass!

My dad would catch another 30 pound fish on this morning, while the best I could do was a 34 inch "baby" bass. I might have outfished him every other day of the year.... but not on Father's Day. Congrads Dad!
