this is also a true story, this happened back when i was a young lad lobstering on a rather small day boat, probably not more than a 30 footer. we used to do two and three day trips with this old wooden, historic gem. well to get to the story we, the captain and i, would take turns driving the boat while the other guy slept. one night it was kinda rough out and we were heading for home when i noticed the boat was feeling a little more sluggish than usual, i slowed the boat down and just took a look around to see if i could see anything out of the ordinary. i didn't see anything unusual, but because i slowed the boat down the captain had woken up up and ask me what was going on. i told him what i thought , and he went out on deck and lifted a plate and to our surprise it was full of water. great i thought to myself we are sinking as panic rapidly started creeping in.
there is one thing you have to understand, back then we never left shore without dry rolling papers and enough stuff to keep one twisted till we reached the dock again. the captain just happened to be one of the biggest heads/burnouts around, i wasn't to far behind him myself back then.
well anyways to get back to the story, i guess he got on the radio and notified some help and returned to me as i was bailing the boat out with a 5 gallon bucket. he stuck his hand into the bilge and fished around a bit and pulled out the bilge pump and started to inspect it and (i remember this clearly) pulled the cover off of the pump and there was nothing in it but a bunch of corroded green wires. i was pretty much stressed out bailing like the wind and not seeming to get any where. i can really remember him asking me to go and get some peanut butter and i'm thinking to myself what the hells he want peanut butter for the damn boat is sinking, so i ran and got the peanut butter thinking maybe he is going to coat the wires with it to stop the corrosion so we can get the pump working again. i still remember the look on his face when i brought the peanut butter back to him and he asked "where's the bread" . we're on a sinking boat and this guy wanted a sandwich, he sat there eating his pb sandwich while i continued to bail. he then put the pump together again. needless to say the pump caught up with the water and the packing around the shaft needed tightening, and we made it home safe and sound. that was my last trip on that boat. but those words"where's the bread " will be with me forever
