IWK - search this forum for Spiral wrap, there were a few lengthy discussions where people had the same concerns as you.
Only time the rod wants to flip over is when the guides are on top. Spine will not make a difference - guide on top, rod wants to flip, spiral wrapped rod, rod is 100% stable. Period.
