(not) waterproof jacket

I have a hodgman wadelite breathable jacket that i bought last year. About 3-4 months of use the fabric lost the coating that made it bead water. I brought it to the shop where i bought it, and was able to exchange it for another. Now i'm having the same problem with the new one.
I've heard you can make them waterproof by using scotch-guard on them, should i use that, or is there something else i can do to make it waterproof again?
