Not to pick on deadheads, but I have a hard time even saying the Dead are a good band , nevermind, the greatest. Just a note: the ultimate musical climax of the hippy/psychedelic era was Woodstock, most people say that the ultimate hippy/psychedelic band is the Dead. Isnt it funny that the Dead played Woodstock and totally bombed, so bad that they didn’t even make the film cut?
As far as greatest, I would define that as:
Great Songwriting
Style (music)
Decent Musicianship
Strong interplay between the band
Image (this is rock and roll we’re talking about)
Longevity
Roots in the Blues
Popularity ( I know, shouldn’t juge that, but you can’t be the greatest band ever if no one listens to you)
Influence – did the band change the way rock music was played?
To me, only one band really fits all these, I’d have to say the Rolling Stones.
