It has some importance in that it's reasonable to believe someone who has served (and been shot at) would have a different and perhaps better perspective on what it means to send our troops into battle. Someone who goes willingly is not likely to be anti-war or more importantly be hesitant to use force when necessary.

This is obviously in contrast to the key Bush Administration members that deferred or evaded service, who many believe have been willing to use our troops in a reckless manner. We sent over 100,000 good men and women to Iraq in a unilateral manner, under equipped, on false intel and without any strategy to secure the peace of Iraq and the safety of our troops.

If you had been shot at in a war, would you be more or less likely to ensure our troops are prepared and deployed for the right reasons and at the right time? It's not the only reason to vote for someone, but it's important never the less.
