I've been known to give the eel a good slap before I bait up. I know that if I've got a fresh and kicking eel on I tend to rush the first couple of casts because I don't want an eelknot--a little wack and the eel slows down a hair on that first lob out of the bucket. This is especially true if I'm fishing a shallow rock pile. Deeper water I tend not to wack them.
