There is - or at least used to be - a big Asian market for live elvers.

The esteemed Irish marine biologist Professor O'Nitis tells me it's because glass eels can be taught to eat fish pellets whereas adults cannot.

Eel aquaculture - there's an intriguing concept - especially given the price of them lately. Too bad you can't get 'em to breed too.

God knows I've tried - you know, pour a little wine into my eel tank for 'em, a little soft romantic music......no luck yet.

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.
