I'll agree to disagree with you. I liked the pennant races the way they were. Win your division and you're in the playoffs, regardless of your record. That's fair. Or why stop at the division/conference level? You want to make it the top eight teams (by record) in all of baseball instead of bothering with leagues? By your standards, that would be fair.
