I also prefer a cap for sleeping and storage safety. With the sliding glass in the cab, I can easily put 10-footers in the back of my 6 foot bed when I need to leave the truck somewhere.

Also, it keeps all of your gear out of the rain.

But if you need to keep your bed open, then a rack is a good way to go. I see guys flying down the beach with rods just banging lose around in the bed...can't be good for the blanks
