There are species that shift from male to female depending on a number of conditions. (stress, temperature, populations, food supply, etc.)

It could simply be that this species of fish is one of these such creatures and that Science had not kept up to date with this possibility.

I really dont want to find out that human intervention (pollution) has caused this, however I would NOT be too surprised.

There is a fine line that seperates a fisherman from a fool standing in water swinging a stick.
