i think seaworms work better than clams, although they dont hold onto the hook as long as clams do, and are harding to get the later you go into the season.
try to get your bait as far out as possible, and as deep as possible. i use around 4-6oz.
about 75% of my shore caught cod are caught at night. i get most of them in spring, but also get them in late fall.
you tend to get skunked a good percent of the time, but its fishing.

Christian! Man, you tell it like an OLD beachrat. Exactly what we did 30+ years ago. Only shove the hook down the worm's throat. and more than one worm. That way they stay on longer.
