Saving Private Ryan is pretty graphic.

If the setting were fictional then maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal.

When the movie came out on the big screen there were WWII/Normandy vets in the audience who were so traumatized by the movie they were in tears and had to leave the theater - the depicted violence was so realistic.

Above and beyond this, we can thank Janet Jackson's boobie flashing for the gunshy stations.
