You can get rabies from contact alone. No broken skin, no nothing
If a cave is populated by rabid bats, you can become infected by breathing the air. As much as I'd like to collecr road kill tails of Raccoons, foxes, deer, and yuh, even coyotes, that little fact keeps me away. That's why the towns hire an animal control officer. That cop is a moron.
