An old timer I know who fished the old Chatham cut at Nauset back in the 50's and 60's said they had great success with the cutty's there as well, you wouldn't have had to cast far there either, get them in the current, and you coulda let them go however far out you wanted.. From what I gather, you kinda wanted these to sit flat in the water, and the rougher, or faster moving the water, the better. The Originals were cotterpinned, not thru wired, nose and belly hook, were even thru pinned together, so the cotter's might have given them the weight displacement, that was unique to them. If my mind id working OK this AM, I think somone, (AdamR, meybey?) posted some pics of the originals, either in the some plugs thread, or the one that I started about a year ago on cuttyhunk poppers.....originals were also mainly redheads/white body.
