I coat most red cedar bodies with what I call a "finger coat" (applied by hand, with latex gloves on) of Devcon 5 minute epoxy... keeps anyone from thinking it's a booger blank.

Just wait one hour, then prime and paint. If you wait longer, then you'll have to knock the sheen off the epoxy first, but I haven't seen any ill effects doing my way.
