Coast Guard Searches For 5 Missing Fishermen
Survivor: Large Wave Flipped Boat
The U.S. Coast Guard continued to search for five missing early Tuesday whose Bedford-based scallop boat sank about 45 miles southeast of Nantucket.
Spokesman Andrew Shinn said the Coast Guard received a distress signal at about 4:45 p.m. from the 75-foot Northern Edge, a fishing boat out of New Bedford with six crew aboard.
A mayday call followed, indicating that the boat had overturned and was sinking in 11-foot seas.
Shihn said searchers would continue their efforts through the night. He said they wouldn't be looking unless there was a chance of finding the men alive.
A nearby fishing vessel, the Diane Marie, rescued one fisherman, named Pedro Furtado. He was in the Northern Edge's life raft when he was found.
Furtado said the boat was dredging and was on one side when a large wave flipped it over.
The Coast Guard launched a helicopter and a jet from its Cape Cod station. Two cutters were also sent to the site where the boat sank.
