Like John said, a 9ft custom rod is about the most versatile. I would recommend a spinning rod, as conventionals get tricky when the wind kicks up. The Sabre 1088 blank by Pacific Bay is a good choice. You can have one built for about 150 bucks. (cheaper than most factory rods and built better) This is one of the best eel blanks around, but I have used mine to throw swimming plugs in a pinch and it worked fine. Try a Penn 5500 or 6500SS reel.
