I would say check out Sacramento Ca. You're not on the coast, but large Stripers, Salmon and Steelhead are just a walk down to the river. Housing is dirt cheap compared to the rest of Ca and it's a great place for kids. An hour drive you can be skiing at Tahoe.
I'd agree with flaptail about Coos Bay. Southern Oregon Rocks, Finding a job up there is tough, though.
