I own a couple of old one piece rods (9.5 & 11') given to me by my neighbor who is 91 years old now. He had them custom made and used them surf fishing the south shore. I've changed the guides and had them rewrapped and they work great.
All my newer rods 9' and above are two piece. I've never had a problem casting or the pieces coming apart. For me, it's purely convenience at this point depending on where I'm going and whether I need to break the rods down.
