I just got back from a visiting my son who goes to college(Eckerd) in St Pete. We stayed at a condo just outside(within walking distance) of Ft Desoto Park. We spent a lot of time at Ft Desoto state park and although I didn't fish I spent a good amount of time scouting it out for next year. The park has two fishing piers - I saw some sheepshead and Pompano being caught. The few fishermen I talked with said there are Sea Trout and a few Snook and Red Fish being caught on live bait. The other areas of the park look like a waders paradise - there are all sorts of gaps in the Mangroves where you can wade flats and launch a kayak. There is a bait and tackle shop on your right hand side just over the Tierra Verdi bridge on your way toward the park. Entry into the park is 35 cents - what a bargain. All sorts of things for the family to do at the park while you fish - kayak rentals, bike rentals, beaches, picnic areas. As you can tell I was very impressed.
