I love that story, but I think it is an urban legend.
I know the chicken gun exists. There is some speculation on who made the gun, I believe it was an aircraft manufacturer, specifically a defense contractor.
Now everyone from fighter jet canopy manufacturers to jet engine manufacturers test these.
I interviewed at a company that makes jet engines, the guy that showed me around showed me a video of a chicken gun test.
they set up an engine inside a large concrete room, looked like a wind tunnel, but I do no think the mess would be good for a wind tunnel. There is an operator controling he engine with a console that looked like a boat throttle.
They crank up the engine, then fire the chicken gun (based on compressed air). And there is some noise and a flash....and the engine kept on ticking.
