I've never used any kind of a weight for eels in the Canal.

I've got some of the biggest bass I ever took in the Canal on the August new moon, probably with Flap standing 40-50 feet downcurrent of me And, I know of an older gent, now long deceased, who took one around 55# on the September new moon.

There's some places you can drift them like that on the east tide, too.
