I have not made any of that style, but for the cranks and minnow types I put a slug in the belly at the thickest part of the plug. I add enough weight so that the plug sits in the water with between 1/4 and 1/3 of the back above the water line when the hooks and lip are attached. I would stay away from lead in the tail unless you get too much swing in the tail and a larger hook will not calm it down.
