Doin' the Ditch

I fish the canal maybe 2 or 3 times a year. But with only modest (or worse) success. Hit the slack today at 5:15 at the east end. Saw a few fish breaking about half-way out, put I couldn't reach them. They were there for about 10 minutes then gone.

I don't want anyone to burn any spots, but can I get some advice about times, techniques, and tackle to increase my success rate? I tossed eels (yes it was day time), swimmers, polaris, and tin...but not a sniff.

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.
