If they're still doing it like they used to, once you send the reel in for service (even though you bought it used) it will then be under warranty. Every serial # on the reel is matched to a name in their computer system so they know it is a used reel. When you send it in all the data will be updated.
Don't give up on that reel yet! It's still the best solution out there.
Ever try buying a spool for a Saltiga? Last I checked it's pretty much impossible short of buying one from overseas somewhere. I haven't heard of anyone getting the reel serviced yet, but I'd be interested in what happens then. Dealing with Daiwa USA when I tried to track down spare spools was more then irritating.
