I'm not sure judging the quality of a $600+ reel just by the ability to buy a spare spool makes a whole lot of sense when there are a plethora of top-notch features about the reel. That's almost like saying a VS isn't worth the money because they sometimes leak oil, or the drag knob tolerance is messed up causing the knob to loosen sometimes when fighting a fish -- oh wait that's why I sold my VS's.
So far my Saltigas have been problem-free.
While I haven't sent in my Saltigas for service yet after almost 2 years of use (they don't need it yet - but I will this winter), the customer service rep I spoke to last year was very helpful and informed me that Daiwa USA's policy is $15 or so for an annual service. We'll see...
