Not that I've really studied the casting art, but I've found a few things critical if you want distance: First would be a smooth cast and timing. Second would be balance between rod, weight, and line. Fourth a well maintained reel. doesn't need to be expensive IMHO. Fifth practice without the fear of breakoffs. If it snaps it snaps so what. The casts get smoother and longer and pretty soon it's out there. 450 feet (150 yards potato/tomato) is not unattainable by the average avid fisherman. I saw Big Dave Thomassy cast once , I will never be that smooth, fluid and graceful with a rod and I will never cast across the Canal either.
