SJ - you can use a dowel, wooden egg, and I once saw on a presentation from Steven Papows that if you are fishing an outgoing drift, cut out dollar sized plastic from a 2 litre soda bottle and attach them up the line a little. These "cupped" pieces of plastic will catch water and carry the fly out in the drift and allow you to use the fly... (I really think the wooden egg is the best )
