John, funny you mentioned Shell Point. My buddy Brad, the Hawg Hunter man, lives about 600 yards north of Shell Point, on Agawam Beach, where there's a small tidal creek that leads up into a marsh. We've caught bass as small as a dollar bill--about 7"--from the docks around his development. I'm wondering if there isn't a small resident population of spawners in that creek.
