The RI regs are something like max. net diameter of 24 inches for herring, at least at the NK run. There are some other details about legal nets that I can't remember specifically, but I never even considered a cast net after reading them. I use a cast net for other stuff, especially fluke food.
At any rate, the net details are on the signs posted at runs, unless some dweeb has taken them down.
