The screw is held captive in the plate with a spring--it is not supposed to come all the way out.

Hold the reel upright with the handle facing right, just like when it would be mounted on your rod. Loosen the screw, pull it out as far as it will travel, hold it and rotate the entire side plate towards you. It should move about an inch and a half and come free.
