What works for me is, rod at 11 o clock, a quick rod tip back to dig the lip, then a verrrryyy, verrrryyy slow crank. The plug will give a nice side to side to side motion leaving a large V wake. Depending on the retrieve, the tail will ride high in the water and with a quick back motion on the rod and release will give it a tail slap. Hope this helps.
