I have a 5 peice kinda light spinning rod I that folds into a neat little soft bag with a mini plug box and have a spin real attached. I keep it in the car all the time. The soft package is maybe 18" by 5 inches by 1.5 inch thick with a small buldge for the reel. Never go anywhere without a fishing rod! Yeah it is kind of cheap but I have it set up with 12lb gear and it casts OK, it's no 9' surf stick but I have landed a lot of nice fish with it from the shore when on "non-fishing" trips. I remember having a day at the beach with the family... Laying in the hot sun watching some surfcaster run around pointing into the water and yelling for his wife to bring his tackle box over to him. I walked over to see what the big deal was (the water was very clear, calm and warm and the august sun was high...sure enough pods of bass were cruseing the break one after the other. He could not get them to bite a thing, including eels, they would look at it, come up to it but never touch it. After about 10 minutes I went back got the emergency rod and tried a few small minnow lures...no luck, then I tied direct to a small sluggo-like rubber with a small lead head. (sand eel lookalike)
It was sight casting for stripers...cast right in front, as soon as it hits the water jerk it hard and reel fast then pause....WHAM!..it was steady picken all afternoon. I was in my bathing suit chest high for about 4 hours...My family went back to the cottage and left me there...must have caught/released 30 schoolies.
Another great "non-fishing" trip, thanks to the emergency rod.
Honestly, I can't tell you how often that thing has come in handy.
I think breakdown rods are good in a pinch but I would not buy one to do any serious fishing with them. Good back ups.
