19 is the trucker's channel. I don't know about now, but in the seventies, CB was useful everywhere but Massachusetts and New York City, because of hecklers. Most people used to listen to 19 for traffic reports, police activity, and general babble, If a discussion was started in an area where many people were using 19, someone would say " kick it up to 22" or some other channel so as to not crowd 19. Most truckers will speak as if they were around kids, so it is okay to listen. Eventually you will understand what they are talking about. If you don't understand something, ask. Women and children will usually get good treatment as most truckers have wives and kids at home. If you hear something that makes you uncomfortable, turn the channel or turn it off. It's a good idea not to let others know what vehicle you are in. In the days before cellphones, you could ask for a landline and someone would often make a phone call for you if you were broken down on the side of the road or in any kind of trouble.
