While I highly respect Mr Schoolie Monster's vast knowledge of fishing, the arts, Albert Bell, The Broncos, and all things western PA - I disagree on his choice for a radio. A handheld is great for docking or working as a backup but a full fledged marine VHF is what's needed.

A handheld maxes out at 3 to 5 watts depending on model whereas a fixed maxes at 25 watts. While you don't get 5 times the range of the handheld, you do get often a lot more than double, as well as better transmission in crappy conditions, and they are less likely to fall overboard
