step 1) RELAX already. Its only July/Aug. If you want to fish for bass in the hot summer...fish deep. (bass like it cool)
step 2) Polish your skills and get set for the fall run
step 3) Bass like to feed at night, so try to fish at night or at dawn. IMO daytime bass fishing is productive only from a boat. (yes I have caught bass in the daytime from shore, but the time/payoff ratio is FAR better at night)
step 4) fish slowly. This ain't no blue fish.
step 5) be quiet. (ie. Minimize noise, esp when shore fishing)
step 6) Try different methods and spots. Walk the beach cast/ wake the beach cast...continue until you connect, then stop. If the fishing slows, begin walking again.
step 7) Talk to the locals (shops and fishermen around boats) be polite and inquire about how the fishing is. (ask if they are catchin any bigones)
step 8) Buy something in the local shops. Most of these guys will tell you a lot if you buy something from them. Drop fifty bucks on plugs/bait and you will find the current hotspots.
step 9) Keep going. When you hear the fishing is hot, fish often.
step 10) Don't just fish the same spot each time you fish. Cover some ground.
step 11) boat fishing is 20X more productive in the mid summer then shore fishing IMO due to water temps. It is not to say you cant catch fish from the beach but you stand a far better chance in the mid summer from a boat. In the fall work the beach.
step 12) EVERY bass fisherman has gotten skunked at one time or another. No matter how good a fisherman he is. Don't expect to catch something everytime you go.
step 13) Read the fisherman and bb's to keep current.
step 14) Go with someone who knows the area well.
step 15) try using big plugs worked slowly at night and live eels. The key words are S L O W and B I G.
step 16) fish remote areas that others will not put in the effort to hike to. (It pays off... big)
step 16a) Learn to "read the water" , rips dropoffs, signs of bait, tail drags, etc
step 16b) Listen for feeding fish
step 16c) keep you eyes scaning the surface for any swirl
step 16d) tread lightly
step 17) keep only what you can eat relase the rest.
step 18) if your surf fishing, don't let bad weather (wind/ seas/ rain/ even snow/ ect) deter you. sometimes this works towards your advantage. (sometimes not) but when it does it can be fantastic.
step 19) when your not fishing, read about fisihing.
step 20) enjoy yourself and the wonderful outdoors. Fishing makes memorys that last forever, that is what is so great about the sport.
step 21)keep you gear in good repair. (read: FRESH LINE, sharp hooks and smooth drag)
step 22) avoid crowds. Yes there are probably fish there but it aint worht the hassle fighting with some fools at 2:00 am about which rock someone is standing on. The beach is wide.
step 23) There is ALWAYS something to learn about this sport. Keep an open mind and be humble.
thats what comes to mind at the moment. stay at it, you will hook up. Be serious about it and you will consistanly hook up. Make every cast count. Seek the "good" water.
