Nauset beach reopens to off road vehicles
ORLEANS – The Town of Orleans reopened the public section of Nauset Beach to off-road vehicle traffic today after weeks of unprecedented closures to protect nesting piping plovers.
The gates to the southern portion of the beach were opened at about 9 a.m. after more than a month of closure because plover nests were found on the beach.
Meanwhile, about half of an eight-mile stretch of the Cape Cod National Seashore from Provincetown to Truro, which was also closed for several weeks, is open to vehicles.
Beach areas will be closed to vehicles until park officials are certain that newborn plovers are able to fly 50 feet - or out of harm’s way - said Steve Prokop, the chief ranger.
“Less than half of our corridor is open,” he said. “But we will be opening several sections in the coming days through mid-August.” Read
