I have two Van Staals--a 200 and a 250. They're both about 8 years old.

The spool design was a major factor. Also, believe it or not, I wanted a bail so I could easily drop a jig back without futzing with the pick-up. Those, and being able to service/repair the Saltiga myself. The Daiwa is smoother, but that wasn't a big deal. I have chronic tendonitis in my left elbow and it's getting to be too much to use a conventional for 4-5 hours of jigging, holding/lifting/fighting fish with my left hand on the rod. And I'm too old to start learning how to cast and retrieve a conventional left handed.
