Ok to wipe the reel down if you dont mind the slickness... but remember the stuff cuts through grease & oil. Dont get it in any place you need lubricated. In fact, it actually does the opposite by attracting dirt due to the 'sticky factor.' I'm not sure if it damages mono or braid, but it is made from petroleum distillates. You know how you need the 'special' plastic containers to carry gasoline in? Well that kinda makes me worry about what WD40 may do to my line.
