You should be able to pull the shaft out. If you can't, it is frozen. Turn it upside down, put some Liquid wrench around the shaft where it goes through the cylindrical pinion gear, wait over night, tap it a few times and yank it out, clean it and the inside of the gear with emery paper, and it should work fine. Best spinning reel ever made (once you convert it to manual pickup).
