The gas in the pump today was bought as crude back in April or May. Pretty soon they're going to start refinig home heating oil for the winter, so the supply of gasoline will go down a bit, which also won't help the price at the pump.
All of the common sense evidence says these bastards are price gouging, but their apologists will come up with 10 reasons why it ain't so.
And as long as people drive up to the pump, put their wallets on top of the pump and say, "here, **** me", the price will keep on rising well before the effects of an increase in the cost of crude should affect the price at the pump.
