SP, ya just reminded me of an incident here about 3 years ago. A black bear was attacking a golden retriever in his backyard. The owner was on the deck,and crazy as it was, jumped off onto the bears back punching it and it ran away.
Sounds like the guy was crazy, but if ya ever owned a golden you could understand why the guy did it.
