You should be able to make rod # 1 work with either reel. Start out with 20 lb mono on either reel if you want to ditch the braid, the 7000 has a much stronger drag and more line capacity. No need to fish eels with weight unless you want to get them down in a current like a breachway, most surfcasters fish eels like a lure. You cover lots of water like a lure, but have the advantage of live bait.. Go to the articles section and check out eeling 101.
