Started mine off slow. We would go to lakes when they were real little, then some salty rivers.

Started taking them out in big ocean when they were older (6+).
Always had the jackets on. The good full jackets, (for lack of a better word) with the "crotch strap" the not the orange ones we all stow in our boats.
