It depends on what the objective of the creation of the product is.
Is about selling a cool shirt?
Or is about selling a shirt that will maximize sales and raise a lot of revenue?
In my opinion, if its about selling shirts, then you're better off just having the site logo and selling them cheaper and providing long & short sleeve and pocket no pocket. This way you capture everyone who has a desire for a shirt regardless of shirt style. There are usually no additional make-ready costs for the silk screener to change shirt stocks.
By going with a controversial design you're immediately eliminating potential shirt buyers and shrinking your potential sales before you even print one shirt.
