I would make a mono leader of 30lbs (since your braid is 40lb) and tie on a circle hook on one end and a barrel swivel on the other. Attach one end of a rubber core sinker a feet feet above the hook so if the weightt snags you may save the rest of the rig. Look up how to tie a palomar knot on google or something.
I have an 11' Surf cast tsunami rod with an avenger Av65 reel. With i think 40lb test braided on it tho it may beto use sluggos in the canal?
>>Sluggos work well. Get some jig heads from one of the shops in the area. THey also will give you some guidance on how to fish the canal

you may also consider one of the beaches as the canal can be a bugger to fish even when you have a fair bit of experience.
